How is Thunder Bay city overall for an international student?

To answer your question briefly. Thunder Bay is an excellent choice for international students. It provides a diverse range of high-quality educational institutions and services, as well as a warm and welcoming culture.

I attended Confederation College myself. In 2020, I finished a course in digital marketing and marketing analytics.

I’m sure most of you are thinking about moving to Thunder Bay to further your education at Confederation College or Lakehead University. However, you are unsure about the city, the cost of living, rent, part-time job opportunities, and other factors. You are not the only one who feels this way.

I’ll provide you with the necessary information in this blog post.

Monthly Rent in Thunder Bay

The city of Thunder Bay is one of the most affordable cities in Canada. International students can rent a room for as low as $400 a month. There are many apartment complexes and landlords that offer international student housing.

Some of these apartments are close to Lake Superior and offer breathtaking views. College students can also find affordable housing near their school, which is an added bonus.

Here is a list of places where you can find affordable rent for international students.

1) The University Residence

2) Confederation College Residence

3) Lakehead University Residence

4) Student Housing Services

I lived on Edward Street on the north side, about a ten-minute walk from the college. I didn’t have to be concerned about the commute. My monthly rent was around $350, which I consider to be quite reasonable.

This is why it’s a popular destination for international students because of its affordable cost of living. The cost of living is lower than the national average and it ranks as one of the most affordable cities in Canada.

My monthly expense was around 800-900 CAD per month. Currently, I am living in Toronto, my monthly expense comes up to $2200 because of the expensive lifestyle.

Part-time job opportunities for International students in Thunder Bay

International students can find part-time jobs at various places such as restaurants, grocery stores, coffee shops, libraries, and more. They can also find work at colleges, universities, government offices, or other public sector agencies where they will be able to use their language skills while earning money on the side.

When I first moved to Thunder Bay, I was told it was difficult to find part-time work. I was able to find work in a matter of days.

However, compared to Toronto, it is a little difficult. As you are aware, Toronto is a city brimming with opportunities. It is simple to find a part-time job.

Summertime in Thunder Bay for International students

Summertime in Thunder Bay is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. The city has plenty of parks and trails for nature lovers and hikers alike. You can also go on a boat cruise, visit one of the many beaches, or try your hand at fishing on Lake Superior!

There are many events happening in the city including festivals, concerts, and fireworks.

Wintertime in Thunder Bay for Students

Students in Thunder Bay, Ontario, can take advantage of the snow and ice during the winter season.

You can participate in winter activities such as skiing, skating, tobogganing, snowmobiling, and others.

During their free time, students can visit the Fort William Gardens and the Fort William National Historic Site.

During the winter, students can also participate in a variety of indoor activities such as visiting museums, bowling, or participating in a variety of team sports.

What are the drawbacks of international students studying in Thunder Bay?

Disadvantages I would say are two major things

1. Harsh winter :

Thunder Bay’s winters are brutal. Winters are long and bitterly cold. There are numerous snowstorms, icy roads, and temperatures that can fall below -30 degrees Celsius.

It begins with a few weeks of cold weather and snow. And things only get worse from there. The snow is piling up and the wind is blowing, so you have to wear a hat, scarf, and gloves just to go shopping.

You can’t go for a walk without getting your nose red and your ears cold. Even if you do manage to get outside, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to get back inside before the storm arrives.

2. It is difficult to build a career in your field after completing your course :

As I previously stated, the main reason I relocated to Toronto was that I was unable to find work in my field (marketing). Though a few of my friends were able to find work in Thunder Bay, many others relocated outside of the city in search of work in the field.

International students investing in Thunder Bay properties

International students are buying homes in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. The reason for this is Toronto’s absurdly high housing prices. The average home in Toronto costs $1,192,000 CAD, whereas the average price of a house in Thunder Bay is $300,000. Most people, including Canadians and international students, cannot afford this price.

It’s a good long-term plan if you ask me.

So, there you go. I hope I have answered most of your queries in this blog post.
